Two dead as tornado hits Philippines

#1 Postby senorpepr » Thu Jun 10, 2004 3:35 pm

MANILA (Reuters) - A tornado has ripped through a town in the central Philippines, destroying hundreds of flimsy houses and killing at least
two people, the national disaster agency and the coast guard say.

A dozen residents from the coastal town of Dulag on Leyte island were reported missing.

The tornado, which lasted 35 minutes on Wednesday morning, destroyed about 900 houses, leaving one elderly man dead and four people
wounded, agency officials said.

"We are still assessing the damage on the ground," said Edna Rola of the National Disaster Coordinating Council.

She said 30 fishing boats were reported missing.

One fisherman died and six were missing on the nearby island of Samar when waves and wind whipped up by the tornado overturned two
boats, the coast guard said on Thursday.

Lieutenant Armand Balilo, a coast guard spokesman, said 26 fishermen had been rescued.

"We are now searching for the missing fishermen because the seas are calmer now," he said.

This is a photo I took of a landspout tornado running along the base of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines on June 15, 1975.

The Tornado

in Dulag was associated with the early stages of Chanthu while the one I photographed in 1975 was associated with a wave disturbance.
