Heavy rains in southern China kill 28, many missing

#1 Postby senorpepr » Sat Jun 26, 2004 3:43 pm

BEIJING - Rainstorms in China’s southern province of Hunan have killed at least 28 people and left almost as many missing, state media said on Saturday.

Six days of rain had forced 180,000 people to flee their homes, damaged 374,000 hectares (935,000 acres) of cropland and disrupted power supplies, they said.

Economic losses totalled nearly three billion yuan ($362 million) and 27 people were missing, the semi-official China News Service said on its Web site http://www.chinanews.com.cn

Floods in China often kill hundreds of people during the summer rainy season and cause widespread damage.
