Death Toll Rises From Floods in Nicaragua

#1 Postby senorpepr » Sat Jul 10, 2004 12:01 am

MANAGUA, Nicaragua - Recently floods and mudslides have claimed 25 lives in Nicaragua, authorities said Saturday as a new tropical depression approached the Caribbean coast.

Civil Defense Chief Mario Perez Cassar said nine people remain missing more than a week after heavy rains triggered scores of mudslides at Cerro Musun, a hill about 95 miles northeast of the capital. The rains also provoked deadly flooding at Cruz de Rio Grande, 210 miles northeast of Managua.

Thousands of homes were damaged, and Perez Cassar said rains destroyed 4,840 acres of rice, corn, bananas and other crops 124 miles northeast of Managua, along the Rio Prinzapolka.

Nicaragua's national weather institute predicted light rain over the weekend as a storm approached the eastern coast.
