Recovery in the Philippines

#1 Postby senorpepr » Fri Nov 26, 2004 2:33 pm

Philippines President Gloria Arroyo is inspecting areas devastated by two strong storms which hit the country within a week and left scores dead and missing.

AFP news agency reports that the president arrived from the United States to oversee relief operations.

She is expected to visit the northern Philippines later in the day.

Heavy floods have subsided in parts of Luzon island, which bore the brunt of the tropical depression Merbok which dumped heavy rains and caused landslides.

Relief operations are continuing in the northern provinces of Aurora and Nueva Ecija, where 26 people were swept away by raging floodwaters.

Days earlier, tropical storm Muifa left a wider trail of destruction in the eastern and central Philippines, killing 61 and injuring 101.

Searches are continuing for 80 fishermen missing since their boats either sunk or capsized off islands including Mindoro.
