Power restored after storms

Tues December 14, 2004

POWER has been restored to all the homes in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast which were blacked out during Monday's storm.

Although the storm caused extensive damage to houses and boats, only one person was reported injured.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a 29-year-old woman was taken to hospital after it was believed she had been struck by lightning on the Sunshine Coast.

The storm passed across south-eastern Queensland at around 2.30pm Monday, unroofing some houses in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast.

In the Bayside suburb of Wynnum, several yachts were damaged when blown from their cradles at a marina.

Energex operations manager Mike Swanston said more than 40,000 people were left without power at the height of the storm.

He said more than 200 power lines were brought down by flying debris, including roofing iron.
Mr Swanston said although power had been restored to most areas by midnight, the damage in the Wynnum area had been so severe that workers were rebuilding the network.
However, he said power had been restored to homes Tuesday by re-routing the supply.

A spokeswoman for the State Emergency Service said crews had finished most of their work by 10pm (AEST) applying tarpaulins to damaged roofs.
She said the SES had received about 40 calls for assistance from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast after the storm.
