Cool down, Christmas will be fine
MELBOURNE reached a top temperature of 36.5C yesterday, well above the December average of 24C.
Across the state Mildura, Ouyen and Walpeup recorded the highest temperatures with 40C, while Gabo Island was the coolest with 21C.
The hot weather affected some train services, with Connex recording some air-conditioning faults on suburban trains and The Overland from Adelaide to Melbourne delayed because of the heat.
A Great Southern Railways spokeswoman said speed restrictions were applied as a precaution whenever the temperature reached 36C.
While the state sweltered yesterday, a cool change is expected to provide relief today and perfect weather for Christmas Day.
Weather bureau forecaster Peter Blake said there was the risk of a light shower in the morning, but it should clear to a mainly fine day with "perfect cooking weather" and a top of 22C.
And cricket fans can put aside fears of the perennial Boxing Day wash-out with fine weather and a top of 26C forecast.
But Mr Blake said the weather beyond Sunday would be more conducive to post-Christmas shopping than cricket watching. "We go into quite a cool period with strong south-south westerly winds and showers," he said.
