PHNOM PENH (AFP) - One woman was killed and 50 homes flattened during a violent storm that hit Cambodia's Siem Reap, the gateway town to the famed Angkor Wat temple complex, an official said.
Chhoun Sao, chief of cabinet of Siem Reap province, said that the freak storm hit suddenly on Sunday evening with the outskirts of the city up to 10 kilometres (six miles) away bearing the brunt of its force.
"The storm completely destroyed 50 houses and 93 other houses have had their roofs damaged. At least 10 people were injured and one woman died," he told AFP.
The woman was killed after being struck by lightning during the deluge, which also damaged property such as tractors, motorcycles and bicycles and killed a cow, Chhoun Sao said.
Impoverished Cambodia is a mainly agricultural country where the vast majority of people live in wooden homes susceptible to bad weather.
