Blizzard shuts down St. John's

CBC News

St. John's is struggling under 48 centimetres of snow and there was no letup in sight mid-Saturday afternoon, said Nick Czernkovich, a meteorologist with the CBC News Weather Centre.

Businesses have closed, drifts are blocking roads and flights in and out of the airport were cancelled.

"They've had a good 10 hours of heavy snow," including 15 centimetres in one hour early Saturday morning, Czernkovich said.

The city has closed down and snow-removal teams are having trouble keeping up with the deluge.

Winds gusting to 130km/h have led to blizzard alerts in the city and surrounding areas and the Northern Peninsula. A sustained wind of 120 km/h is hurricane force, Czernkovich said.

The snow started lightly at midnight local time, and "it's just been downhill from there," he said.

The forecast calls for up to 60 centimetres.

The storm is expected to let up Saturday night, and move west bringing snow to Labrador and Iqaluit overnight and Sunday.
