A major M7.0/0B Solar flare occurred in region 960 at 0212Z. Region 960 is a low latitude active region associated with the declining cycle and is fairly large with a complex Beta-Gamma-Delta magnetic field. The appearance of such a large old cycle active region indicates that we are still some months removed from Solar Minimum particularly since no high latitude spots with new cycle polarity have appeared yet.

Clear skies in AZ today so the latest Kitt Peak magnetogram is available. It shows that region 960 has strong mixed polarity fields with definite Delta characteristics and a tendency towards reversed polarity in the trailer portion of the region. Optically, it appears to be the merger of two separate regions which would account for the mixture of polarities. Definitely possible for more M-class activity and possibly another major flare or two.

Would be nice if 960's cmes and the accompanying solar wind vortices helped bring an early monsoonal flow to the Southwest deserts.
