Advise people give on protecting their home based on a one time event and even basing it on the smallest area of the event should be taken with a grain of salt.
Ever seen what a pine cones can do to a plate glass windows? and what damage that glass can? do even 100 or so miles inland? where folks don't need to evacuate.
Concrete and steel building were destroyed in what relation to where the storm hit?

All along the Mississippi gulf coast......traveling from Gulfport to Biloxi on highway 90.......it is unbelievable. Those big concrete and steel parking garages at the casinos.....right on the water.......significant damage. Locals on the coast used to park their extra vehicles at the casinos when evacuating. The parking garage at The Grand in Gulfport......what wasn't destroyed had to be demolished. Those structures could withstand the wind but not the debris choked storm surge. It looks like they were attacked in a bombing raid using bunker busters.
