That's some number for such a (relatively) weak storm, but it can happen.

Suprised considering it is making landfall now, with plenty of wind and storms still to come tonight.

The eye seems to be lingering off the coast between Fort Lauderdale and Miami so there will be longer wind exposure.

50 mph winds can bring limbs down on power lines and power crews won't go up in the bucket to fix them till after the storm passes.

Not here. DH is up in Tallahassee, standed. Was supposed to drive home today. So much for that. :/

Power has flickered about 10 times. I figure it'll eventually go.

Wow a half of Million power outrages. How many went out after Frances? I think it was around 1,500,000 or something.

Frances brought a ton of limbs down here in NE Florida. Sustained 25mph+ winds for 3 days tends to topple many small trees and limbs.

Doesn't take much to bring down power, especially if there is a lot of debris ready to fall.

Nope... we lost power from Frances for a few hours and we only had a few gusts around 45 mph...

Ours just came back about 1/2 hour ago

YAY!!! I feel for those without power. It sucked for the 4 hours we didn't have it. But, we did get to test out our new generator, so that's a good thing. We have verified that it runs the freezer, refridgerator, a couple of fans and lamps with no problem whatsoever. And I don't even think we were close to capacity.

In Delray Beach, we certainly didn't get hurricane force winds. Guess that's because it took the SW jog and the N side of the storm was actually the slightly weaker this time.

Everyone in Broward is in my thoughts!

http://hurricane.methaz.org/hurapak/AAL ... 12086.html

This is a computer model that uses census and other data as well as the NHC track to predict the amount of damage (uninsured) a storm will cause. The model predicts that the storm caused/will cause a little over 900 million in damage in Miami-Dade, which accounts for most of the storm damage. That seems a little high but not completely unreasonable given how populated the area Katrina passed over. The model run started at 23Z.
