How to post links without annoying everyone on the board

#1 Postby Windy » Fri Aug 26, 2005 9:10 pm

Heya! For those you not very used to/proficient in the ol' internets, here's a FYI: when you post a ridiculously long link in here, it screws up the entire thread that you're posting to. What happens is that the website software will tell your browser to make the browser window much wider than the screen allows in order to accomodate your link. This forces people to scroll horizontally to read every post in the thread that you posted to. This is very annoying! :) However, there is a solution! You can use a nice little site called tinyurl to reduce the size of your gargantuan 200+ character link to something that won't make everyone want to run you up the nearest flagpole. Try it! The site is:

http://www.tinyurl.com

For example, this link:

http://tinyurl.com/b8tus

links to a very, very long URL generated from a Google search. And look how well it fits here!

This has been a PSA. Remember kids, drink your drugs, don't do milk, and don't post links so long that they ruin the website. Thanks! 8-)

Annoying posts - how about topic headers that don't give any detail?

like Oh NO!
or I can't believe this
or This is strange
or We all are going to die

Come on, put a little detail in the topic.

Another annoyers - request specific info for a podunk town for your super-specific individual event -

What will the winds be Sunday in Beeville, TX for my Aunt Martha's 80th birthday?

Got the idea?

Also... on the links... you can use the url function here in the forums.

Code: Select all

National Hurricane Center

That way, instead of something like this: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov you only get this: National Hurricane Center
