Stuck on Cruise Ship and Preparations for Katrina

#1 Postby mahicks » Sat Aug 27, 2005 7:07 pm

My Mother and Father-In-Law live on currently on a cruise in Cozumel..
They are supposed to be home on Monday in the Mobile Bay Area.

What are the chances of them getting home on time?

They live ON mobile bay on the Eastern Shore...

Should I send my wife and son to make preparations of their home?

We live in Tallahassee..

Thanks for any input.

(Mods, if you need to delete this to make room for more important threads, I understand. They just have a beautiful home and would like to protect it if neccessary for them.)

Hmmm, IMO, it wouldn't be a bad idea, but do you want to risk sending them in there and having them not be able to get out? And I doubt they will be home in time unless the fly.

Thanks for the reply..

My Sis lives in Homewood, AL So they would go there after prep. My father in law already has precut and marked plywood from Ivan.

I would just really hate for the worst to happen and their home get flooded like their neihbors did in Ivan when someones patio furniture went through a window on the Bay side and surge just rush in..Destroying the lower level of their home

theres not a chance of a cruise liner trying to get into mobile on monday. Even if mobile is clear the storm is going to be directly in their path coming from the yucatan.

The problem is your sister may get in there and not be able to get out. May want to reconsider that plan.

If they can get in and out of there tomorrow then yes, I would have someone
secure the house as best as possible. If I were in your shoes, that is what I would do.

Good luck.

yeah, I saw that.

I figured it was out of the question on them getting home.

My wife is in doubt because she spoke to her little brother on the phone today and he told her that " mom had called and said they would be home monday"

Take it from me. Port of Mobile will close as they did for Ivan last year. And with the insane seas/swells expected I doubt any ships will be traveling in the GOM north of 25N and east of 90W. Wouldn't be a fun ride for the crew or passengers.

Thats what I tried to tell my wife. I only made her more paranoid. She is now worried for them. I told her they would just get an extra day or two of fun and the sun.

She tried to call them on the $12/min phone line but "All circuits are buisy"

Once again, I appreciate the posts. I'm going to go spend some time with her before they leave.

Weather Update From Different Cruise Line

#12 Postby HumanCookie » Sat Aug 27, 2005 8:14 pm

Carnival Cruise Line:

Tropical Weather Update

August 27, 2005 - 8:00 PM

We have been closely monitoring the progress of Hurricane Katrina. At Carnival, the safety of our guests and crew is our number one priority. All of our ships will be navigated at a safe distance from this storm at all times.

We have made the following storm-related itinerary changes:

NEW ORLEANS CRUISES

Due to the closure of the entrance to the Mississippi river by local officials, The Carnival Conquest August 21, 2005 cruise will return to Galveston, Texas on August 28, 2005. The ship will stay in Galveston until Monday at 12:00 noon. Guests can debark either Sunday or Monday and take air or land transportation back home. All in-coming access into New Orleans and the Port is now closed due to the evacuation process. Guests that parked at the pier in New Orleans will not be able to access their cars until the storm passes and there is a complete assessment of the area. The Port of New Orleans hotline (1-866-476-7866) will provide updated information about access to the port area as it becomes available.

MOBILE CRUISES

The Holiday August 25, 2005 departure will be delayed arriving back to Mobile. Depending on the actual speed and path of the storm, the ship may arrive on August 30, 2005.

The Holiday August 29, 2005 departure will be delayed and depends on the arrival from the previous cruise. It may be revised to a 4 day cruise departing on August 30, 2005.

We will provide additional information on these cruises as soon as it's available.

MIAMI CRUISES

The Imagination 4 day cruise on August 25, 2005 will change to a 2 day cruise departing on Saturday, August 27, 2005.

The Fascination 3 day cruise on August 26, 2005 will change to a 2 day cruise departing on Saturday, August 27, 2005.

TAMPA CRUISES

The Carnival Miracle August 21, 2005 cruise will return to Port Everglades (Ft. Lauderdale) on August 28, 2005. Motorcoach transportation will be provided to the Port of Tampa and the Tampa airport.

The Carnival Miracle August 28, 2005 cruise scheduled to depart from Tampa will now depart from Port Everglades (Ft. Lauderdale). The ship will return to Tampa as scheduled on September 4, 2005.

Motorcoach transportation will be provided from both the Tampa airport and the pier at the Port of Tampa to Port Everglades. Transportation will be available between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Guests arriving at the Tampa airport should proceed to the baggage claim area and Carnival staff will direct you to the pickup location.

For guests driving to Tampa, it is very important that you DO NOT drive to Port Everglades. Please park at the pier in Tampa and take the motorcoach to Port Everglades. The ship will return to Tampa at the end of the cruise. For guests that purchased air transportation from Carnival, your incoming flight will be changed to arrive in Ft. Lauderdale or Miami and you will be contacted with the new flight information.

Guests will be provided at $50 per person onboard credit.

The Inspiration August 25, 2005 cruise will return to Port Everglades (Ft. Lauderdale) on August 29, 2005. Motorcoach transportation will be provided to the Port of Tampa and the Tampa airport.

The Inspiration August 29, 2005 cruise scheduled to depart from Tampa will now depart from Port Everglades (Ft. Lauderdale). The ship will return to Tampa as scheduled on September 3, 2005.
