Ophelia a possible dangerous hurricane?

I know...I know...All hurricanes are dangerous, however...I am beginning to wonder if Ophelia could become a significant hurricane before landfall?

Look at the radar::


That is a dangerous radar. Now...it may only be reforming back to a minimal Category 1, but look at how tight that core is...and how powerful some of the banding is. A lot of times what you will see, when you have rapidly intensifying hurricanes, is a small, tight inner core.

While I would not expect that to occur now...when it re-crosses the Gulf Stream before landfall....the water it has NOT been over, and moves in a "GASTON-LIKE" way...I would not be at all surprised to see some quick significant deepening. Then again...how strong is it when it does that? Is it 65 mph...and ramps up to 90 mph...or is it 90 mph and ramps up to 115 mph? A lot of time to watch it...but some food for thought.

Right now...I'd say landfall near Savannah, GA....100 mph.

It's interesting how that loop in the track was eliminated overnight.

I have noticed that there appears to be a more east or slightly north of due east movement. IMHO, it needs to gain more latitude if it is going to loop and possible affect the GA, Carolina's next week. But if it stays more on the easterly track and then loop, could it not poosibly affect Central to North Florida possibly next week? Thoughts and comments welcomed.

Models have shifted significantly since yesterday, now showing more of a Carolina impact. I don't want a hurricane, but it would be nice to get some rain!!

Highly unlikely for Florida---either Georgia to North Carolina, or out to sea (still a possibility, given the models dismal performance with regard to the strenght of ridges). I say out to sea, following Nate.

Ophelia's been spinning over the same relative area for awhile now. She's sucking up a lot of the heat-fuel that keeps her going. The upwelling has probably robbed her of the high octane heat that was there earlier this week. She's moving more easterly now, and is forecast to stall before retrograding back toward the US coast. When Ophelia moves off to the west again, she may get to tap some "new " water that doesn't have as much cooler upwelling in it. Gut feel says she won't exceed Cat 2, and will ram ashore as a Cat 1 and quickly dissipate. Nobody really wants a hurricane, but I will welcome the rain!

I noticed as well that the models are trending more toward the Carolinas. It will be interesting to see how the runs come together over the weekend.
