This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Rita? You mean to say tropical depression 18...I say it will become a tropical storm durning the next 12 hours. Fellowed by a hurricane by 48 to 54 hours. Maybe a cat2 over the Gulf.

Not likely even close to Katrina strength thanks to dry air, upwelled waters, and a possible increase in shear once Rita gets in the GOM, but major hurricane (even Cat 4) is not out of the question.

I feel pretty safe calling it Rita now after seeing all of the recon reports with 45kt FL winds, so I think Rita will reach a peak at 120-125kts. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a little low, though.

Hmm... I don't see this system going over Cat. 3... althought that is bad enough. It's kind of creepy that it has either a very high chance of hitting the only spared area of the whole GOM.

You got to remember though, there's other factors besides SST which will determine the strenth of a storm. Dry Air, Shear, etc...They even said with Katrina that it takes almost PERFECT conditions to make a storm a strong cat4 or cat 5 cane. The conditions for Katrina were PERFECT, anything less then that, means a less intense storm. A Cat 3 seems the most likely possibility based on the future conditions of the Gulf and what the NHC is saying. A Cat 3 is nothing to sneeze at though.
