Thought I might share a few things learned during the 3 evacuations we've done in the last year or so:
--Make a list of what you need to do before you leave. This may take a few minutes, but your mind is racing so fast it would be easy to forget something when you actually get into the putting away/up and packing. A good resource is: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/storm/content/storm/getready/before/last_minute.html
--Be sure to have phone numbers (home and cell) for co-workers and neighbors. I've heard of so many folks after Katrina who still cannot contact neighbors, etc. because they didn't have cell phone numbers or emergency numbers for friends' relatives.
--Have some music for the evacuation ride. The radio is going to be doing storm info non-stop, most likely. Yes, that info is important, but is equally important to everyone's sanity to have something else to listen to every now and then (esp. in traffic).
I thought these ideas might help some folks. Good luck and God bless to you all!

KVUE (Austin ABC station) just said that all the hotel rooms in Austin and Round Rock have been reserved for the weekend. Even if you are still waiting to see where Rita's path will be ... figure out where you'll be going.
The Red Cross shelters aka public schools here in Austin can hold 45000 evacuees.
The news media here is getting a little nuts. Starting to bring up Carla 1961 and also Katrina.....
