Apparently one of the design goals for the Eisenhower Interstate System has failed, that is to facilitate the mass evacuation in the case of disaster, either from nuclear war or from weather events like hurricanes.

Quote from the Wikipedia entry "Dwight_D._Eisenhower_System_of_Interstate_and_Defense_Highways"
One potential civil defense use of the Interstate highway system is for the emergency evacuation of cities in the event of a potential nuclear war.

You know I had a discussion about this with my father in law a long time ago. Back in the 50's when many of the highways were built there wasn't the amount of vehicals like there are now. Thing is more people started owning vehicals faster then the highways were built. The national highway system was never meant to handle the amount of traffic it does now.

Thing is more highways need to be built, specially in heavily populated areas. But in order to do that you need money and land. Unfortunely both are extremely difficult to get. Believe it or not getting the land (basically by buying out peoples houses from them) is the harder of the 2.

Add into the disaster the current Harris County multi million dollar 911 system that has fail time and time again on a regular day....I was not in an evac zone but take care of my elderly parents. .. Dad just finishing pnem. and well as several infection (bladder, prost) and with his history of cardiac prob. decided to leave didn't think his system could take the heat..and stress of the storm.....didn't count on having to drive NW without AC for most the trip...We found a room in Temple because he looked bad by late afternoon...so we didn't make it to Abilene like planned. It was a nightmare trip! but not nearly as bad as what we heard on the radio about 45....only turned on radio for a few minutes as we were desperate to save gas. Kids and parents sleeping but I am still shaken by the whole experience... mfdolphin has been the best keeping me informed about dev. didn't know hotel has pc for guests to use. The people on this board are amazing...I am so concerned about the stall Ican't see straight...My brothers are there...my friends...the people on the highway....God Keep Texas Safe!

AMEN TO THAT!!!!! :D And may many angels wrap their arms of security around you and your family. I hope at some point you are able to get some rest. You sound frazzled and I can understand why but, you'll need some good rest to remain as vigilant as you have had to be all day
