why would they say Rita was going to stall?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

she hasn't stalled and is still moving, plus a cold front will be helping to move the remnants right along. :D

They changed the stall forecast yesterday to a NE movement. :)

I don't think anyone minds very much - a very big problem was avoided with the unexpected rapid movement, though the threat from flooding and tornadoes continues across the mid-south this morning.

This is a deja vu scenario reminiscent of Ivan last year. Remember, the forecasters initially predicted that Ivan would stall out over Alabama, bringing historic flooding to the SE. But the storm kept on truckin' NE and never did stall. All these little quirks show that, no matter how far we have come in forecasting the weather, mother nature still holds the upper hand and we still have much to learn....

I agree, mother nature humbles us and our technology. I am thankful Rita didnt stall and dump copious amounts of rain, like forecaster predicted

The thinking was that Rita would get left behind by the trough currently over the Midwest... and that didn't happen.
