WOW - What were we thinking!!??

#1 Postby Ixolib » Sat Oct 22, 2005 11:11 pm

Now that we've entered into the never-before-used-name list, I thought it would be interesting to take a quick look back at what many of us were thinking last March, April, and May!! Wow - what were we thinking!!

Here's the 2005 "prediction" list, sorted on number of hurricanes
predicted by 118 S2K Members:

And here's the original link to Cycloneye's thread that continues through page 18 when it was locked at ~midnight on May 31:

For all you new members, I'm sure Cycloneye will start a new thread for the '06 predictions on March 15, just as he has in years past... No doubt, THAT ought to be an "interesting" list, to say the least...

Even my revised idea of 18 named storms fell short. The combination of a neutral ENSO and record Atlantic warmth (5 consecutive months per the TNA) proved potent and the result was unprecedented tropical activity since recordkeeping commenced.

So I was a little off in my named storms forecast....again. 25 tropical depressions have formed so far in 2005, just incredible....MGC

I really had an optimistic view 12/7/3, so far 21/12/6.

9 TS more than I forecasted.
5 H more than I forecasted.
3 MH more than I forecasted.

When was the official NHC/TPC forecast issued for this season? Their seasonal forecast (as well as Dr. Gray's out of CSU) were pretty good in calling for a much above average season.

I am happy with how my forecast turned out. Always underestimate storms that way you're either right (AWESOME) or wrong (AWESOME). I win either way.

My July 31st update was better

24 TDs
22 NS
11 H
07 MH
69% Chance of Category 5

But I think that will still fall a bit short in the end
