History of major hurricanes taking this path?

#1 Postby FunkMasterB » Mon Oct 24, 2005 2:37 am

I'm curious as to what Miami can expect from this hurricane, assuming it comes ashore well south of Naples, in the everglades. The storm is moving quickly, and over flat, swampy areas, so it probably won't weaken a whole lot.

Do we have any past experience with a 3/4 hitting Miami from the west? If so, what happened?

Hurricane Isbell (1964) made landfall in the same area Wilma will make landfall and crossed the Florida peninsula at a similar trajectory. Isbell struck as a category 3 and maintained category 3 intensity during her crossing over Florida.

Isbell is the same hurricane that spawned all the tornadoes too.

Thanks. Did it hit Miami directly, and if so, any idea of what kind of damage it caused?

It doesn't seem like she hit Miami directly. From what I've seen, it seems as though it came in near Naples and exited at Palm Beach, so north of Wilma's projected path.

I think we're in for a doozy here in Dade that's for sure.

At least Miami won't need to worry about surge. It's gonna be a windy morning, though.
