Max Mayfield recently stated they would "cross that bridge if they have to"

So we don't know yet.

I'm going to say that there is a high probability that Beta will be retired

How can a greek letter be retired unless they go from Alpha to Gamma in the case of Beta.

Some have suggested that this will occur -- they will just skip Beta. There are several other possibilities, but as was noted earlier, there isn't a set protocol for this, so nobody knows right now.

That becomes unnecessarily confusing should another 21+ named storm season come along.

I asked this question about a month ago and the responses to my query clearly indicated that:

"Greek names cannot be retired."

It's that simple folks.

boca, those were unfounded rumors that I'm personally not sure how they got started.

The NHC actually has not made an official position on the situation, as the said "We'll cross that bridge when we get there." By that wording, it sounds to me that it will most likely be retired as they were just making that statement cautiously because the odds of it happening were quite slim.

Why not just dump a 05 at the end of the letter, then you'll know the difference between(and if we ever get this far again in our lifetimes)the Beta that caused all that damage that may happen or the next one that forms.

Stil lthe NHc have caused themsleves alot of trouble for not just placing a 05 at the end of it,probably though no greek storm would get upto major status before landfall in a poor country at this time of season.

Lets just hope Gamma doesn't do the exact same thing.

Senorpeper has said it can not be retired and that makes sense given it is a letter and not a name. Retiring β would be like retiring the letter B.

KWT: I believe officially the year is added to the end of the name of the storm, they just don't do so on the advisories.

I think they should retire it and if the next season we get another busy year they should just skip the letter and go to the next one, the purpose of retiring names is so they don't cause emotional pain on those who survived a storm with that name.

Imagine you are a poor farmer in Nicaragua who lost everything to hurricane Beta2005 including family, how would you feel if you hear about Beta 2007 coming towards you?

This is totally my personal opinion...but I think the above example of "how would you feel" is often an unavailable, maybe unimaginable luxury for most of the world. When reality is harsh on a daily, weekly, monthly basis (not necessarily BAD, but harsh), life and death perspective can be very different.

adding: Because I'm pretty ignorant about the Mosquito Coast, I looked it up...scary how many major rivers are there, regarding Beta's impact

I think they should retire the enitire Greek alphabet and come up with another "Extra" list that is only used for runover seasons, and it would be made up of names that can be retired and replaced like all the other lists.
