That is not good what you are saying Jabber about south florida and the growing population there.I can't imagine another evacuation like Floyds one in florida as I think that this time after that experience from those people many wont do the same next time.

I hear you. I think the next Floyd that comes around, people are going to procrastinate . Floyd was a monster and with just the right curve could have taken out 1/2 of the Florida coast line. People remember Andrew and the devastation, but most do not realize that Andrew was fairly small (core of intense winds) and a pretty dry.
I was 6 miles inland in a shuttered, well built house in a no flood zone and was pretty worried about the path of Floyd. I think most people are not going to heed the warnings next time 'They always curve'

Great discussion everyone over here ... and extremely good points from everyone.
Believe me, it doesn't take an Andrew, or a Hugo, to have the potential of causing devastation ... look at Tropical Storm Allison ... retired due to the severity of the flooding rainfalls, and $5 BILLION in damages raked up by flooding ...
As bad as Hugo was in Charleston and the Carolinas in general, it could have been a LOT worse ... had it not been moving 30 miles per hour, in which the impact of Hugo was lessened by 50% and still did mind-boggling damage in the Charleston area and beyond.
As mentioned before, 2003 has been quite a year weatherwise that records have fallen by the wasteside, and quite possible that trend will likely continue ...
The 1926 Florida Hurricane, had it occurred today (the damage adjusted to today's inflation) would have more than TRIPLED the devastation that Andrew wrought upon South Florida.
