I have never understood the excitement in retiring a name for a tropical cyclone. I hate to break it to you, folks, but the affected governments choose not to retire the name. That's it. It's over. Emily will be around in six years.

Then again, I may be a little bias since I think a majority of tropical cyclones should NOT be retired.

Actually, I agree with you inasmuch as way too many storms' names, IMHO, have been retired that truly didn't reach the levels that they should have reached. For some it's like a sporting event--sort of "this storm was the Babe Ruth, or Michael Jordan, of the year. Their number/name needs to be retired." This is why I say it should be decided by a fairly strict set of standards (as per my earlier post) and if it doesn't/didn't meet all 5 in a rather significant way, then it just doesn't get retired.

The thing is, unlike other names on the lists, Emily has a lot of "baggage" with her. The name has grown to have a destructive feel to it. In other words, it kinda sticks out like a sore thumb on the list.

Yes Emily did a lot of damage in northern Tamaulipas, definitely much worse than when Bret came through the King Ranch in '99, but not as bad as some recent hurricances. The only firsthand other damage I've seen lately was from Charley, which was certainly worse (I'd subjectively say the wind damage from Emily +/- 15-20 miles back from the Gulf was comparable to Charley's wind damage was after it had passed about 50 miles inland). I haven't been down to La Carbonera on the coast but hear it got hammered pretty badly, and they should have been just south of the eyewall. There's virtually nothing right on the coast immediately north of there

I think people who consistently follow tropical storms will think that, but the majority of folks won't.

Mind you that a majority of people (including in Mexico) don't associate the name Emily with a category five hurricane.

That's not what matters. What matters is a storm's effects and if people from a particular country want it to be retired. The government decides in the end, though (Mexico in this case).
