It was interesting to note that reporters who covered both the Tsunami and Katrina said the severity of damage looked to be the same - ocean waves are ocean waves, though, a Tsunami wave can be much higher. It's also interesting to mention that of the distructive tsunami waves to reach Hawaii, some were not that high - some less than 8 feet in height, so, a wave doesn't have to be very high to be deadly.

In Katrina, there's still discussion of just how high was the highest wave, but, as Jim Cantore said, the building he was in was thought to be safe enough (if I'm not mistaken, near 30 feet above sea level), but, the water came up to the second floor...
