Water Temps. Dips to 70 Degrees at Daytona Beach

#1 Postby cmdebbie » Mon Aug 07, 2006 8:38 am

The water temperature has dipped to 70 degrees at Daytona Beach over the weekend. Can anyone explain to me why this has happened? I just don't think I have ever heard of it going that low in mid August. Thanks in advance for any explanations. :?:

A prolonged west wind will blow off all the warm surface water and cause upwelling from the deep.

Actually, according to the National Weather Service office in Melbourne, it is not offshore winds that cause upwelling, but persistent Southeast winds along the Florida east coast. Here is an article related to the extreme upwelling event that occurred along the Florida east coast in 2003.

Wow, I guess this happens more often than I realized. Thanks for the great article, that explains it well.

Guess I still have a lot to learn! :)

We had the same thing here, South winds kept the upwelling happening so it stayed in the 60s until recently.

Our water temp here was 90 this am at the 6am news marine report. Warmer than bath water. My pool is at 95 (running the sprinkle to cool it down) Id like some 70 degree water in my pool right now. Can you send some my way? :) 70degrees is really low for this time of year there.

I remember being near the Jupiter coast one day that summer.......and the air coming off that cooler water felt like a Santa Monica CA sea breeze, not a Florida East Coast sea breeze.

Yeah, we had the same thing happen up here in Melbourne back in 03. The seabreezes were unusually cool for most of the summer. I don't think it actually began to go away that year until September, but it still stayed in the 70's I believe along the immediate coastal waters. Interestingly, after Isabel passed by on her way to North Carolina, the upwelling went away.

Had the same thing happen in Panama City Beach a few years ago. Water was like ice in the middle of July. This summer it is nice and warm. I was at Pensacola Beach a few days ago and it was like bath water.....MGC
