Technique for making your own RGB images.

#1 Postby wxmann_91 » Tue Aug 15, 2006 3:52 pm

Don't know if this is appropriate for the forum, or if anybody's interested; mods may delete this if it is inappropriate or breaks any rules. I learned this technique on another forum, but this tutorial is in my own words.

Step 1: Get yourself a copy of Image Analyzer (it's freeware).

Step 2: You will need a visible image and a black and white (unenhanced) IR image from the same time. I've got two samples for you to use: Visible, Infrared

Step 3: Open the images in Image Analyzer in this order: Visible, Visible (again), Infrared.

Step 4: Convert each image to Grayscale by going to Image-->Grayscale.

Step 5: With the IR image on top, go to Image again, this time to Combine Images.

Step 6: Click OK, save, and you're done!

If all goes well, this is what your final product should look like:

My satellite receiving program does that automatically for APT images and can for GOES images if I make sure that they are all in register. When they were transmitting the WEFAX via GOES (it terminated last October 1st) I would make colorized images of GOES all of the time.

No problem.

For a comparison of computerized vs. man made imagery

GOES Floater imagery:

EDIT: Though I post-processed the bottom image in Photoshop, ImageAnalyzer has just about everything that Photoshop has, including sharpening, color balance, and more. It's a good idea to sharpen the image just a tad after finishing the image. Don't know if ImageAnalyzer has stuff that will brighten/darken an image or adjust its contrast, but that's a good idea too. The first image in the thread was not post processed.

I just made another image, this time of the recent SAL outbreak.

Source is Dundee. You will need to register for the images.
