New Bouys=N and S of Puerto Rico,6 more soon on SW Atlantic

#1 Postby cycloneye » Sat Apr 14, 2007 7:38 am

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/Caribbean.shtml

:uarrow: This new bouy north of Puerto Rico will be important when storms or hurricanes that miss the NE Caribbean move north of the Antilles towards the Bahamas.

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/tropical_atlantic.shtml

:uarrow: And there are a bunch of new bouys in the Eastern Atlantic that will be very important when the systems are in that area.

Heck with that buoy near the cape verdes, we might even add a few depressions a year based on the fact that the nhc has not had the data out there for all these years.

PIRATA (Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic) is a project designed by a group of scientists involved in CLIVAR, and is implemented by the group through multi-national cooperation. The purpose of PIRATA is to study ocean-atmosphere interactions in the tropical Atlantic that are relevant to regional climate variability on seasonal, interannual and longer time scales.

Above is the definition of PIRATA.Normally Pirata means pirates, but here it has another purpose and it's an important one.

That bouy 41043 north of Puerto Rico will be a fantastic resource. Wouldn't that have been a great thing to have in 2004 and 2005?

This is an excellent addition to the current monitoring system. I think more in-depth studies were needed for the eastern tropical Atlantic and MDR (Cape Verde spawning grounds). The newer buoys within the MDR region (and the buoy north of Puerto Rico) are superb tools. On an unrelated side note, I think a Cape Verde station for monitoring the frequency and intensity of easterly wave passages and SAL outbreaks throughout the year (and season) would be outstanding for research. In addition, this might aid in efforts to monitor the subtropical 500 mbar ridging.

Good keep adding them,,,pretty soon we will be able to have a very good idea on what is closed LLC in not out there. Heck the nhc most likely won't wait as long any more out there with this. Its good to hear that they added one for the Caribbean...The more the better.

Here I thought the nhc was running out of money,,,They might of gotten what they needed. Personally would like the nhc budget to increase 2 fold. Put a few around 20-35 north/55-70 west to make the network really good.

The ones in the eastern atlantic have been there for years. They were under another tab last year.

Good news from NOAA as they will deploy 8 more bouys in the Southwestern Atlantic in the next few weeks.

Correction: only 6 more. 8 altogether, which two of those are already out there.
Reason of correction:
NOAA has deployed the first two of eight new hurricane buoys off Puerto Rico in an effort to fill a gap in important weather data coming from warm, storm-generating waters there. Six more hurricane buoys will be placed in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean before the hurricane season ends in November.

The yellow dots at graphic represent where the 6 new bouys that will soon be deployed are going to be located. That one that will be deployed just west of Guadeloupe will be very helpful for us who live in the NE Caribbean islands.
