The only reason I would ever embrace such a stupid idea as taking away the "original" identity of the Hurricane Center or National Weather Service would be if it's incorporation under NOAA's sole name shielded those entitites from the privatization crowd led by our friends in State College, PA. That being said I don't think it would given another Senator or Congressman getting his re-election pockets lined by the big bucks of corporate America. It is so tempting to go on a political rant here but this isn't the board for it. The NHC and NWS enjoy tremendous respect by the public and taking away their own identity so that NOAA's somewhat unknown name is boosted makes as much sense as making Ray Nagin Director of FEMA. Speaking of that analogy FEMA at one time under James Lee Witt as a separate agency enjoyed respect and confidence, now look at it having been folded into the greater mess known as Homeland Security.
