Lovebugs and the tropics

#1 Postby dixiebreeze » Mon May 21, 2007 12:04 pm

I do NOT mean this as a silly question. The usual heavy influx of Lovebugs -- at least in our area of west central Florida -- are much less noticible this May. I wonder if that has anything to do with weather patterns. Last May, they were thick as pea soup and we had a rather mild tropical season. Thoughts anyone?

No doubt has to do with the drought situation more than tropical activity. Also should probably consider warmer/colder weather than normal during the winter months.

You sent the lovebugs my way. They are all over the place as normal. Another month and they will be as thick as pea soup.

They out of control in OTown. My daughter is catching them by the bucket full, literally.
Was at Rock Springs today and they were pretty bad, I have seen them worse but they are still pretty heavy this time around.

Wow. Considering all the replies, I guess we're just lucky here this May.

We haven't seen many so far this year a few here in there. But last year the front of my house after I cut the grass was black (normally white). There were massive swarms of 1,000's of them. Had to wear a mask to keep from breathing them in when I cut the grass. I don't think it's related to tropical activity but i sure am thankful there not here yet.

I wonder--- Could the wildfire in North Central Florida be affecting the lovebugs in your area, dixiebreeze?

We usually have an overabundance of those pesky lovebugs here but not this year. My car is thankful for that Image

I have seen only one or two here in Mobile. I guess that being 13.5 inches of rain below normal for the year is the reason.

I'm north of Orlando - they are here, but not as bad as in past years. We've had a lot of smoke lately, maybe that is detering them.

We went to Daytona 2 weeks ago for a conference and our poor car was coated both directions. I'd forgotten how bad they get in central Fl this time of the year....they're definitely out there.

That might have been possible a week ago, but we seem to be pretty of smoke now. I don't think I've ever seen so few of them as this May and I've been here 27 years. I'm praying for nice gentle TS to end this horrific dryness. Humidity 32 % today! Like being in Arizona.

I will put up a sign that there is more flying room in your area...Maybe they will leave me alone...
