Tropical Low "Mayflower" raining goodness and bles

#1 Postby Berwick Bay » Fri Jun 01, 2007 1:21 pm

The prayers of many Floridians are being answered, as a beneficial tropical low that I like to call "Mayflower" moves out of the Yucutan Channel and SE Gulf to give that which so many in the sunshine state have cried out for--life giving rain. To call this system 92L or Invest whatever, really does no justice to something that is living and attending to the needs of the living in Fl. "Mayflower" is a great example of how we so often look at things in limited and narrow ways. Thank goodness for "Mayflower", and thank goodness for tropical weather. When we look back at the 2007 season, we should remember this system. It is in fact one of the most important of the season. I'll remember her as "Mayflower".

Yeah B.B., do you think it may make landfall in the Tampa area? Also, if it does make landfall in this area will there be enough rise in the tides to give me reason to move my car inland and off the island? I'm willing to accept your advise on this matter due to your obvious insight regarding this storm!! :D

Once again thank you everybody. But believe me, I know that you're only as good as your last forecast, and its gonna' be a long season. As for the matter at hand, Barry(or Mayflower as like to call her, and I think she is definitely female), I see no reason to doubt the mainstream NHC forecast which takes Mayflower toward the northern penninsula. Steering currents are very well defined and the storm should move pretty much as forecast. If I'm not mistaken, isn't the projected landfall very near Clearwater?? I'm sure my Fl geography is not as accurate as many of you on this board. Wouldn't that put the storm in your neck of the woods Weatherwindow (Rich)? BTW, Weatherwindow is a fantastic poster and observer of tropical weather. "He knows his stuff!"

COASTAL STORM SURGE FLOODING OF UP TO 3 TO 5 FEET ABOVE NORMAL TIDE
LEVELS...ALONG WITH LARGE AND DANGEROUS BATTERING WAVES...ARE
POSSIBLE IN THE WARNING AREA NEAR AND TO THE RIGHT OF WHERE THE
CENTER OF BARRY MAKES LANDFALL.

Treasure, this is the official storm surge forecast for Mayflower(Barry), I see no reason to doubt it. Now you should be to the right side of where the center goes inland (you're near Tampa Bay right??) so I would prepare for 5 feet of surge (as the advisory says). You know better than me how much water you can take in you're present location. In general, most coastal residents can handle a 5 foot surge. Take care. If you haven't found out yet, try to get some info on your elevation above sea level. Its critical when dealing with these systems.

Treasure Island is quite low. If your car isnt in an elevated parking garage or in the interior part of th island, I would move it. I am gussing you are in a condo or a high rise, I think you will be OK.

Yes T.I. is pretty low. The parking lot for my condo complex is approx. 4 feet above sea level at best. We, luckily, are on the 8th floor, approx. 130 feet or more above any troublesome water issues! T.I. is approx. 12-15 miles south of Clearwater, directly on the gulf coast. I may just wait and watch to see if the water begins to breech our seawall before I move the cars. If this storm were any stronger my lovely '99 limited edition Pontiac Firebird would already be on it's way to an upper level, interior space in a solid concrete parking garage!!! 8-)

Again, congrats on an excellent 10 day forecast B.B.!! :D

Don't know about your car, but we're raising our boat on the lift, seeing as high tide for Dunedin is going squaring up with the surge associated with Barry. Sounds as if it could add up to at least 5-6 feet above normal. I'd move anything that is anywhere prone to flooding.

I'm gonna be up all night watching what Barry decides to do or not do anyway so, if it looks like our water are rising up enough to even try to threaten, then I will be taking a ride for sure!! :D
