Is TS BARRY really a TS or....

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

But tropical cyclone are not supported by a jet stream.

It's not a matter of, "Oops... I didn't forecast it, so I'm against it." Actually, I and others forecast the NHC to make it Barry by bending the rules of tropical meteorology. That's just the facts. Yes, Barry officially formed--but only by "twisting" the rules.

Maybe it was "Barry" itself that twisted rules. We are dealing with a system that seemed to have the characteristics of tropical cyclone, yet it also seemed it was all enhanced by baroclinic processes, as you would expect with an extratropical cyclone. Maybe we still have things to learn about tropical meteorology. Maybe that's why we still suck at intensity forecasting. :D

Hmmm . . . reminds me of Alberto last year . . . "baroclinically enhanced" means extratropical when dying but tropical when forming. Not the most consistent of policies, but as AFM said, it all does come down to trying to get the public to listen, even if that does mean sacrificing our scientific records for teh betterment of the lives of the people.

I agree 100% with this statement. As humans, we tend to want to set distinct boundaries that seperate different things. Well, while this works for most of the tropical systems, there are a few out there that clearly have no regard what-so-ever for the set rules we put down. Barry just happens to be one of those. Just goes to show that we do not know everything, regardless of how much we dont want to admit it, and that Mother Nature is still in charge.

Barry was without question a tropical warm core system. Barry however did not remain a true TC for long. Barry began its extropical transition shortly after naming. By the time Barry reached the Florida coast he was ET. The most questionable naming of a system in recent years was Grace in 2003 followed by Bertha in 2002.....MGC
