Here's a link about something I just saw in the 2007 July 02 and 03 translated METAR weather obs from Karachi, Pakistan.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/p/z/pzl112/CURRENT%20DISCUSSIONS/2007%20KARACHI%20VOLCANIC%20ASH.htm
P.S. Here's the link to the translated METARS that NOAA provides for Karachi:
http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/OPKC.html
They're adding more cities by the day, so if you'd like to see what's going on in any city around the world, try that link, and just change the word "OPKC" before ".html" to the four letter identifier of the city you'd like. For example, if you'd like to see what's going on recently in Manila in the Philippines, just change the "OPKC" to "RPLL":
http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/RPLL.html and there you go.
Here's NOAA's list of city station IDs:
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/tg/siteloc.shtml
BUT, remember that many cities, especially in Asia and Africa, are not online yet. So you have to use the "trial and error" method to see if the 4 letter ID will work. One thing I've learned is to check this site first (change the "REGION" drop down menu selection to the one you're interested in):
http://weather.uwyo.edu/surface/meteogram/
If it's on the U of Wyoming site maps, it's probably on the NOAA link. BUT remember that if anything looks fishy, go to the RAW METARS.

Per your question in this link:
http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/p/z/p ... %20ASH.htm
The VABBYFYX address is the Indian Government's activation alarm coded for use in METAR observations (in case that volcano erupts, for example), similar to the EAS here in the US...
