Just a point here. Some of the Newbies may not be familiar with posts from Derecho. Please listen to him, or in the least absorb the contents of what he posts. He does not post often, and when he does, what is contained is pretty much backed up by fact. He will correct misinformation posted in this forum, and will not do so unless what he is proclaiming is factual. He knows an awful lot about the tropics, hurricanes, ect. He may not have a bunch of capital letters after his name (maybe he does, but does not disclose them) but his insight is valued. When there is a ensueing threat, and alot of possibilities are being hypothesized, he will dispell the insignificant and dwell on the probable. Even though he picks his times to post, when he does it is valued reading. Just a point I had to make, and I think alot of the regulars over the years will agree....except for the ones that do have capitalized letters after thier names. TheShrimper.

Yeah, Saturday morning I was quite convinced it was headed for Palm Beach or maybe northern Broward. I was incommunicado at a client site all day, so I was more than a little shocked when I got in my car and turned on the radio about 8pm. Had to scramble like hell to secure both my parents' house and my boat (and a few friends' boats) in time.

Yes, I remember that.
I was living in Boca Raton at that time. It was supposed to be heading towards me. I went to my girlfriends place and spent the night watching the radar on the weather channel. The power flickered a few times, the wind blew and it rained, but it wasn't too bad. I went to bed around 3 or 4 in the morning without knowing how bad it was south of me.

Yes, I remember Andrew. Saturday I was at the Marine Stadium on Key Biscayne watching Jet Ski races. It was a beautiful day. I knew there was a storm, but wasn't worried until I got home that night. I was "home alone" as my parents had driven to NY to take my sister to college.
Sunday, I prepared my parent's house in Kendall with the help of my then boyfriend, now husband. Horray for him! He shuttered the entire 2 story house!
It was very frightening, but we came out fine, considering the destruction that Monday morning.
I don't think the Marine Stadium ever held another event.....

Re: Remember Andrew?
Can you imagine if this board were active when Andrew was approaching? There would have been thousands of posts that weekend!
I am glad to have this board as a resource when a storm is in the area. I always find out things before they show up on TV.

Re: Remember Andrew?
I remember watching Channel 7 Rick Sanchez reporting the top news story when Andrew became a Tropical Storm. This station was/is known for really over dramatizing the news a bit, but they did get the point across concerning Andrew. Their TV met at the time was a bit bizarre, however anyone who watched this channel had to have known something was out there.
The Saturday before, I got all my supplies, gas food etc. The news reports indicated Andrew was going to hit near the Dade Broward line. Most people I knew were expecting Andrew to re-curve before land fall as most 'canes have done in the past, and waited until the last minute to prepare. Norcross was the only TV met that I am aware of who first forecast a Dade county hit with massive destruction for areas in and near the eye wall. Other TV mets went along with the NHC forcast and were not as detailed int their reports, but did show concern. For people who were busy on that weekend, the radio stations were really nonchalant about the whole thing until the day before (Sunday).

Yup...August 24, 1992...I remember it well...my aunt used to live on Caribbean Blvd in Cutler Ridge...they got the worst of Andrew...what a mess...whole communities were destroyed and abandoned, never to be rebuilt.
I didn't think I'd ever see anything like that again in my lifetime...then came Charley...and Ivan...and Katrina...
