Jamaica Mon, You Have a Problem....
With all the hubub of where Dean "may" strike the US Gulf, I see very little chatter about the hell Jamaica will be paying, come about Sunday or so.
Gilbert sliced Jamaica up but good in 1988....and they have dodged bullets (Charley, Dennis, etc)ever since. I am sure alot of their economy is based on tourism dollars...we were there the week of Wilma in Oct 2005, and it rained for three straight days!
So good luck Jamaica....this may be even worse than Gilbert, mon.

I know - there's a few million people on that island including holidaymakers and they have what looks like it will be a devastating cat 4/5 heading straight for them. That is terrifying and I hope that people there are fully warned and are being encouraged to get out now or find safe places to be. This looks disastrous for the island and its people, God help them.

At the moment it looks as if they will be on the south side of the eye, and given Dean's relatively small windfield at the moment Jamaica just might get away with yet another near miss and a lot of rain. Cross your fingers for our Jamaican brothers.

The situation there is DIRE - the government isn't doing much to warn the people!
As of 2pm there "has been no official word from the government here yet"
and
5:20 pm EST "I really wish that the Govt would wake up and post a warning already"

sounds like Home Depot should figure a way to open a store there.

I expect a full fledged Cat 4 to rake Jamaica by Sun-Mon....worst case being if Dean strikes at SE corner of island, then traverses the island....the N shores will be blasted by wind/surge. and Cat 4 winds will pulverize the island.
I hope all tourists can get out...Montego Bay airport stinks and is rough to deal with in normal times, much less this situation!

I talked to a friend that has family there - she said the mountains help to keep them from too much damage. I hope she is right.

Jamaica is in huge trouble if it hits them. From Drudge:
FLASH: Could be unprecedented event for Jamaica; direct hit with 150 MPH sustained winds [topping Hurricane Gilbert's 135 MPH winds [Sept. 1988] and Charlie's 100 MPH winds in 1951]... Population of Jamaica is nearly 3 million people; and is 49th most densely-populated country in world...
I've been so focused on US impact that I forgot all about them.

just saw that TWC is doing satellite live shots from Montego Bay area....they stated that the airport is pretty much chaos, and not everyone who wanted to get out via flights were able to.
I am sure TWC is praying that the eyewall just does skirt the north coast, or that airport will ceast to exist!

I just hope the eye doesnt hit Kingston.
Check it out on Google earth.
They are densely populated and there are many neighborhoods built on the side of mountains. Kingston bay has a long breakwater and the airport is built on this breakwater. The harbor inside the breakwater would be swamped by storm surge that would jam into a dead end bay.
If Dean tracks north of the island they might get away with not too much damage. But if it goes just south of Kingston and the eyewall slams it with a major storm surge, it wont be pretty.
Hope for a northern track.

There is Jump TV but right now it is saying that there is no rights to broadcast the show on the internet. But I was watching it earlier today so not sure if it is just for this hour or not.
There are several other channels in the general area....

Kewl, I think Fox will be there however - need to be bloody careful however - Dean will be a Cat 5 in a few hours IMO unless it is already.
