Concerning the current "excitement" over 92L's possible future - we can only look at what happened with Dean...
Without exaggeration, it would take me at least two hours to count all of the predictions posted on this board concerning how Dean would end up here and there, based on the tracks of past hurricanes - only to take a current track that most did not see coming just late last week...
When it comes to predicting a hurricane's track, it's similar to standing 50 feet away from a dart board, only to predict that every dart will end up in the exact same place as the last - each hurricane track is unique, so, while one might end up in one place, it's unlikely that the next will do so...
I only wish folks would accept that...

True, but isn't that part of the appeal of this forum? It is an opportunity to test one's knowledge or to practice applying theory. Certainly many are wrong, but where else can one venture a guess ( sometimes "educated" and sometimes not) and get feedback? I've learned almost as much from ideas that were proven wrong as those that were right on target.

Yes, that's the appeal of this board, but, it's also easy to sense the fear in some of the folks who posted replies here over the past few days...
Late last week, there were a number of "NOLA" predictions posted here, and, you can bet that upset many who live or lived there, so, that sort of post only adds to the world's problems, by creating unnecessary anxiety or dread...
As mentioned in the "Let's stay calm..." thread on the active storms board, TWC made a BIG mistake during Friday evening primetime, when one of the OCM's read a viewer blog that opened with the volitile statement, "Let's face it - Dean is coming to Texas..."
Apparently, TWC received a phone call or two in the minutes following that statement, because, they quickly back-pedaled, nervously stating, "We are not saying that Dean is coming to the U.S....", so, reading or posting statements that only create anxiety are worthless - except for those that intentionally desire to do so...
As many here know, S2K has been mentioned in a number of news items, so, and especially during high-profile situations such as Dean, this site receives many visitors - most not being as weather-savvy as those who regularly post here, and, might misinterpret posts (despite the disclaimer) as being truth...
Sadly, the TWC incident is one of the biggest problems with the Internet - any loose cannon (myself included) can post whatever comes to their mind - whether right or wrong - and it is instantly delivered to a gullible world...
P.S. Thanks cycloneye - very glad that Dean bypassed your area...

so, i am not sure where yo are going with this...are we not suppose to talk about the latest models and possible tracks for fear of upsetting someone??? i agree that there needs to be some restraint by some people here...however, open debate and discussion is what drives this board... so i really dont know what to take from your post..

I wasn't as upset with anyone here, but, was more irritated over what happened while watching TWC on Friday evening, and, just wanted to mention this by posting the current topic, along with similar issues found on this site...
For us, well, hopefully, as you said, there must be restraint, but, for certain, professionals in the news business must not recite a statement from a viewer's blog that could easily be misunderstood by millions of people - that's just not right...

Thanks - that's a big 10-4 to you, too...
I just wish TWC would back off on what they require of their OCM's - on Friday (and over the weekend) there were several OCM's that spoke so LOUDLY, and came across as so stressed, that listening to them was getting me stressed, to the point that I muted the television, which I found worked just fine...
After all, as with most here, we know what we are seeing, and, with the help of closed-captioning (unless it's in the way of the satellite photograph) I can read what the stressed OCM is shouting, so, it makes for a much better, as "they" say, "viewing experience"...
LOL

TWC loves it when there is a big storm to track, it's all about the ratings for them, I don't rely on them for hurricane info, I come here, and listen to our local people.
