Your opinion of Gabrielle...misnamed? fully tropical?

#1 Postby CrazyC83 » Fri Sep 07, 2007 10:04 pm

I am sure there is a lot of debate still going on at the NHC on what Gabrielle is right now (some mets probably think it is not warranting a name now, others think it is a fully tropical storm).

I have decided to make this poll here. What is your opinion on Gabrielle. Without any temperature data (vortex messages) and only a broad circulation (but still a closed circulation) at last flight but winds clearly tropical storm-force, what would you have called it?

1) Non-tropical low

2) Subtropical Storm Gabrielle (per NHC)

3) Tropical Storm Gabrielle

Personally, looking at the recon data extrapolated and satellite pictures, I would have called it Tropical Storm Gabrielle.

"Broad and elongated centre" in the advisory, I think there might not even be a closed centre and NHC is doing a safety-first naming.

I would've put it as Tropical as well... but the NHC knows better than I do.

I think subtropical Gabrielle is the right call because they found 40knot winds and convection isn't fully wrapped around the center otherwise it would be fully tropical.

This might bring up the question on whether they should be allowed to issue tropical storm (or hurricane) watches and warnings on an potential system threatening land that has yet to develop...

I guess they feel it will be fully tropical once its at the coast to issue tripical storm warnings.

Probably subtropical storm at this point. I expect a full tropical soon though.

They issued the watches and warnings on Andrea which was never expected to become tropical, so they can issue them on subtropical systems.

I agree with Chacor, it resembles a surface trough and not a (sub)tropical storm.

Tropical storm watches/warnings are for winds and the status of the storm does not matter.

Non Tropical Low.
An early misplaced noreast'er at best. I like the term gale-center also.

It's a semi-tropical 'norwester.

I don't think it established a complete warm core or the convection would be closer to the center. Or it is and the shear is responsible for all the displacement.
