The 35 kt I posted is operationally what it is and that is what I used. Of course that will likely change once the TCR comes in.

I'd have Noel much higher if it wasn't Hispaniola where it happened. Gordon killed about 1,200 in Haiti and wasn't retired...which is why I have it as a toss-up.

Gordon was the exception, not the rule, remember that. And it's getting kind of old too; there are plenty of other excuses. However, death tolls are still going up, so it's a bad idea to hold firm to an estimate right now.

What I think should happen:

Dean retired (my choice is Darren)
Felix retired (my choice is Fernando)
Noel retired (my choice is Neil)

Therefore, 2013's list could look like this:

Andrea
Barry
Chantal
Darren
Erin
Fernando
Gabrielle
Humberto
Ingrid
Jerry
Karen
Lorenzo
Melissa
Neil
Olga
Pablo
Rebekah
Sebastien
Tanya
Van
Wendy

Darren and Erin, I would revise that. Think of all the puns...

That's actually why I suggested Darren. Couldn't resist.

Darren, Erin, and Karen all in one list?

Nice. XD

It's a no brainer, in my opinion, (and in everyone's opinion) that Charley should have been replaced with Clyde... but the WMO is too boring for that.

Exactly, there's already two names that rhyme, why not another one?

But yeah, if they don't Derek, Damian, or Dustin would also be good choices.

The Bonnie and Clyde references might have gotten old after a while anyway.

I'm just glad we never got to hear the Kirk puns last year. "Hurricane Kirk is boldy going into cooler waters *weatherman chuckles, studio chuckles, camera guy chuckles, and I die a little inside.*

Those could be separated by many weeks anyway if there are two rapid-fire storms followed by a long lull like this year...

Here would be my 2013 list:

Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Derek, Erin, Fritz, Gabrielle, Humberto, Ingrid, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Neville, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastian, Tanya, Van, Wendy

(Of those names, ten were not from the original 1983 list)

We'll never use Van or Wendy. Might as well throw them out...

Although I doubt they take this into consideration, Noel is a good retirement candidate since N-names aren't retired often (ever?) and there are plenty of possible replacements. (The same for Stan in 2005)

I was thinking Noah as a replacement name, though it would spawn a thousand and one corny jokes.

Have they even given serious thought to changing the way they name the storms in the Atlantic? Seems silly that there is an A-storm every year but only one W-storm ever. What they ought to do is start the list where they left off the last time. For instance, if Noel is the last 2007 storm, they should start 2013 with Olga.

If we were to adopt any other naming system, I would want one similar to that of the West Pacific, for precisely those reasons. However, the system now works awfully well because the storms can so easily be listed in order by their name; while the West Pacific is much more confusing, at least on that front of naming.

WPac used to do both alphabetical order and they continued the list where they left off. I think that would be more helpful than having five Debbys or Emilys, which we most likely use again when we get to those lists.

I picked Neville as replacement for Noel to maintain the ethnicity (French) of the name. Just like with Dean -> Derek and Felix -> Fritz.
