EPAC: Interesting area of convection near 140W

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

EPAC: Interesting area of convection near 140W

#1 Postby Coredesat » Sat Dec 22, 2007 5:37 am

There's a very impressive blob of convection near 8N 136W that has persisted for some time. There is currently not a low associated with it, but satellite loops do show what looks to be some cyclonic turning. The 00Z runs of the CMC, UKMO, and GFS develop a low from this feature and move it westward. Wind shear is fairly high (about 30 kt over the area), but has been decreasing, and there is favorable upper-level diffluence associated with the area.

UPPER LEVEL DIFFLUENCE ASSOCIATED WITH AN
ANTICYCLONIC CIRCULATION NEAR 10N135W IS ENHANCING STRONG
CONVECTION ALONG THE ITCZ W OF 135W.

I'm not saying this will develop (it's unlikely that it will), but it will be interesting to see if it persists.

When is the last time there was a post-season storm in the CPac? (Has there ever been one recorded?)

Tropical Storm Paka developed on December 2, and later became a supertyphoon that caused heavy damage on Guam. http://www.prh.noaa.gov/cphc/summaries/1997.php#PAKA

It seems to have realized what time of year it is, as it's weakening now.
