Season Over? (a/k/a Frank's Attempt at Humor)

#1 Postby Frank2 » Fri Jun 13, 2008 7:42 am

A-haw haw - I couldn't resist...

Still, the tropics are quiet (too much shear and dry air) - have a nice weekend...

Yep it is indeed not too busy out there though we are in June so all is as expected really!

The scary thing is I bet in late July if things haven't picked up someone will post a thread like that and actually be serious about it...

BVI,

Haw - no, but, I think someone put too many scoops into the Mr. Coffee this morning...

LOL

P.S. Have a good day out to the east-southeast...

P.P.S. I agree KWT - though the seemingly endless weather-related natural disasters here in the US over the past few months make me wonder...

Frank2 very funny :P

We do note that *many* seasons in history did not start until mid August or later so plenty of time.

Again, my motto is the REAL season is Aug 1st through Oct 31st. June, July, and November comprise sheared TS season 8-)

Someone is going to jump on you and point out Audrey and Kate, but that is generally the fact.

On average, June and July, IIRC, combine for just a tad over 1 named system in the Atlantic combined.

Well we've seen quite a few hurricanes in June, July and November so I'm not going to agree with it being TS season but no doubting the mean of the season is as you say it is.

Plenty of active seasons didn't really get going till mid-August, 1969 only had 2 weak TS before mid-August and ended up with 19 storms...1999 had a slow start as did 1998, 1950 had a very active season in terms of majors even if a couple may have been over-egged and that didn't have the 1st storm till the 12th of August...1961 had 2 category 5 hurricanes yet didn't get the B system till early September!!!

Time to write off this season as inactive!

On a serious note, June is quiet. Activity picks up around August. 2004 Hurricane Season had a late start.

Yes, Bertha was a very rare early July CV hurricane:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_ ... %281996%29

I was living in Palm Beach County at the time (towards the end of my post-Andrew relocation days), and, it was pretty unsettling for everyone to see a major hurricane like that, so soon in the season...

Considering all of the natural disasters in the world so far this year (including last night's 7.0 earthquake in Japan), I'll say nothing outside of anything tongue-in-cheek (also known as cheeky, for those in GB), about what might come this season...

Earthquakes and volcanoes are completely unrelated to hurricanes. This year earthquakes have been a lot in the news because they have been occurring in areas of dense population and therefore, can be called a "natural disaster." But most of earthquakes occur every year in places that are light populated and not populated, and we never hear about of them. This year may be active but earthquake activity is not an indicator.

You went through Andrew and Katrina?

I'm glad you don't live here. :D

A big enough volcano in the tropics will, by the popular theory, cause a multi-year period of cooling that would slow down tropical activity, IIRC.

What I tried to say was that high volcanic activity doesn't indicate high tropical cyclone activity. In theory, like you said, it's probably the opposite. A hugh volcanic eruption would likely reduce the number of tropical cyclones.

Looking at tropical cyclone activity between 1882 and 1884, the years before, during, and after Krakatoa erupted in August 1883, the number of storms detected in the Atlantic didn't vary very much. In 1882, 6 TC detected. In 1883, 4 TC detected, and in 1884, 4 TC detected. I say "detected" because many storms were probably missed during this time due to the lack of technology to track tropical cyclones. Tambora probably did have a major effect on the number of tropical cyclones in the Atlantic.
