Bertha Farthest East This Early?

#1 Postby wafbwx » Thu Jul 03, 2008 7:25 pm

I'm planning on using this graphic in my show tonight. Can anyone confirm whether Bertha is indeed the farthest east that we've seen a named storm form this early in the season (June/July)? It looks like Bertha's the first storm to be named east of 25W this early in the season. The tracks you see were extracted from the NOAA Coastal Services Center site.

Thanks,

Steve

it's the farthest east named storm prior to July 10.

The previous record holder was Bertha (1996)

Derek,

That doesn't look right...1996's Bertha wasn't named until 40°W:

Date: 5-14 JUL 1996
Hurricane BERTHA

Steve,

I went through the stats on UNISYS. For June and July, Bertha 2008 is the furthest east named storm to form.

Bertha 2008 was named at 03 July 2008 1500Z at 24.7°W.
The previous title went to Bertha 1996, which was named 05 July 1996 1200Z at 39.0°W. (According to UNISYS)

For the earliest storm to form east of 25°W, Bertha 2008 takes the title from Alberto 2000, which was named 04 August 2008 0600Z at 22.3°W.

I dont think there was a named storm that formed east of Bertha 1996 prior to July 10 (at least where the system became a TD).

There was a TD that formed SE of the Cape Verde Islands in 2000, but it never made TS status

Thanks, senorpepr. It just jumped out at me this morning that we had a named storm near the Cape Verde Islands on July 3rd. I knew it had to be rare.

Wow, that's ridiculously impressive! It broke the record by 17° and a whole month!

Remember that Arthur was the first storm in May since Arlene in 1981.

Having attended UT, and having seen the ABC movie of the week from the late 60s with Kurt Russell playing Charles Whitman, the University of Texas sniper who killed 16, I always wondered what tower was used, with a river and large ships on it.

Anyway, went to Baton Rouge for the regional SPE student paper contest at LSU, and then I figured it out.

I later lived in Lafayette working offshore, and listened to the classic rock station out of BTR and the morning hosts 'Walton and Johnson'. Funny guys.

It doesn't seem like we have many seasons that don't break some records anymore!
