Recon question - latitude

#1 Postby CrazyC83 » Sun Jul 13, 2008 11:20 am

I'm just wondering what the farthest north that the Hurricane Hunters will go, since I don't think they have a Northeast base? I don't remember them covering Hurricane Juan in 2003.

Good question. I think Bermuda is the top end.

I know in the winter they fly into nor'easters. Not sure if that helps.

I think it all depends just how far east the threat area is, I guess they would fly pretty far north if the system was close to the coast.

Didn't some type of "Canadian" recon go into Juan before it made landfall? I remember something like that.

Very good question.

we typically go from 55W-IDL (E/W) and Equator to ~50N (N/S) ....

normally it depends on what season it is... if its winter storm season we'll fly noreasters out of Keesler. Because of the large nor'easter threat to the East Coast, we will not re-locate.

if a tropical cyclone has a threat to New England we will catch the storm also out of Keesler.... depending on if a northeast base has room, and money is available (thats the key), then maybe we'll re-locate.

We did fly Juan for the Canadian gov't.

Interesting thread. I really have no clue about the layouts, facilities, logistics, etc. of AFB's in the northeastern U.S., particularly when it comes to C-130s, but, geographically McGuire and Dover seem like natural choices to stage out of. Which other bases would you be most likely to go to?

Westover ANG & Dover have C5s
McGuire & Charleston have C17s
CGAS Elizabeth City, Baltimore & Rhode Island ANGs have C130J
Hunter AAF has Army Helos
Dobbins AFS, Pope AFB, Georgia ANG, Patrick AFB have C130E/Hs
Homestead AFS doesn't have assigned aircraft
Andrews AFB has C9s/C21s
Langley AFB has fighters
NAS Norfolk, Oceania, Jax & Key West have navy aircraft

... it solely depends on the logistics of the location... whether they can support up to 4 crews & ~50 maintainers at one time.

look in bold for nor'easters

Langley may be a fighter base, but there's also a NASA Research Lab there and the Base can take anything with wings and engines. However, one drawback to the place is that it's only 7 feet above MSL at the BASOPs building.
