Not familiar with that poem....does the word 'after' come before 'october' in it?

The pros have a very different catchphrase:
"October is South Florida's Most Active Hurricane Month" -NWS Miami homepage

Here's the poem (told to me by a native Miamiam - his Mom's family deeded the land that became Sebring):

June, too soon
July, stand by
August, prepare for the worst
September, remember
October, all over!

90% of south florida hurricanes occur between august 15 and october 15...so not sure if i would use the folklore as a indicator for south florida...esp when the NWS office in Miami states October is the most active hurricane month...but ultimately each person has to assess each risk as it comes, and not assume folklore or proverbs will steer a storm away.

Well, I wouldn't say it's folklore but what has been learned over many years...

True, just because it's October doesn't mean we can turn our back on the ocean, but, it usually does mean that the season is toast...

To be honest, while statistically October might be considered the most active month for this region, that has to be taken with a grain of salt, because, while most systems that form in the Western Caribbean are more likely to come this way, at the same time that area is about the only favorable area left in the entire basin, especially later in the month, and, in fact, never does shut down completely, since the southwest Caribbean is often favorable for development year round...
