Should Morakot be retired?

It is obvious that Typhoon Morakot's impact on Taiwan has been huge. I think it would be appropriate to retire Morakot from the list of typhoon names.

The problem is that Taiwan is not a member of the Typhoon Committee or the World Meteorological Organization. Therefore, Taiwan cannot make the request for retirement. However, after Morakot, Taiwan has expressed interest in joining the WMO. It's main obstacle is China.

Do you think that the WMO should should overlook the fact Taiwan isn't a member and retire Morakot?

Another country could make the request on behalf of Taiwan. (Maybe China or the Philippines?)

I don't think the typhoon committee requires nations to specifically request retirement. They've retired storms that have not done much before, so I think as long as there's a consensus within the committee to do so it will be retired.

In any case, the contributing country (Thailand) can also request its retirement.

I think it should be retired, but Fengshen was not retired last year and IMO it deserved it (its PAGASA name Frank was) so who knows.

If I recall right, the typhoon committee discusses names that were used the previous season. For example, 2005's Longwang was only retired at the December 2006 meeting.

From what I can remember, they retire names every 2 seasons, ie, 2006-07 seasons in 2007 meeting, 2008-09 seasons in 2009 meeting.
