October is the most active of all months for South FL, based on climatology. Most systems that impact South FL in this month originate in the Western Caribbean. I should add that during el nino years like this, however, the Western Caribbean sees less activity October typically.
snippet from this NWS Miami article:
Although overall tropical activity typically begins to quiet down in the Atlantic Basin during the month of October, south Florida is still prone to a tropical cyclone strike. In fact, since 1851 more hurricanes have struck the south Florida mainland in October than in any other month of the season.

If there were ever an example of an artificially controlled hurricane, King is a good candidate. Can't get much more perfect than a track like that, given the geography of Miami....

One major requirement for a hurricane hit on Florida in October is for a hurricane to first be able to develop in the tropics. That seems to be a problem this year.
