I agree - the pilot video looks good and I'm sure Dr. Knabb is glad to have someone he knows from the Miami area to talk to and who also knows as much about tropical weather as he does, so that's good - kind of like Frank Gifford and Al Michaels used to be on Monday Night Football when they'd call the Miami Dolphin games at the old Orange Bowl (lol)...

I rarely watch TWC since it has deteriorated so much, however; Bryan Norcross brings instant credibility to their Tropical Weather coverage.
He was amazing in getting people through Andrew and is respected by those who watch him.
I just happened to pass by TWC and saw him do a segment on Danielle and it was refreshing to see someone on TWC who knows what he is talking about!
I missed the thread on it so was freaked to see him there!

If ... If they would give the tropical specialists ample time to fully discuss the current status of the tropics, I might start watching again. Unfortunately, Norcross and Knapp get very limited time, while pure non-sense takes the majority of what should be their time.
If you seriously follow the tropics or want to learn more, spend your time on this forum. Watching most of the other TWC personalities do tropical updates is just very painful and frustrating to watch.

Oh, I had totally given up on TWC until I stumbled upon Bryan.
If they give him airtime, he is valuable.
But then again, they would have to interrupt one of the Weather in History docs and I don't think they want that.

It's really something that TWC should have done a long time ago, because Steve Lyons had to bear the long hours alone as the sole hurricane specialist (after John Hope passed away in 2002) - now TWC has Richard Knabb in the morning and Bryan Norcross in the evening, so it works out much better...

Congrats to Bryan. We love the guy down here in Florida. He helped many people the night on August 24, 1992.
A tenacious spirit - excellent meteorologist - and all around great guy.
Bravo TWC and hip hip horray for Norcross.

He's doing a good job in my opinion. They are giving him a bit more time the last day or so. I hope they keep it up. They have really scaled back Jim Cantore's time and given Stephanie Abrams much more airtime. I don't like that so still ticked at them for that and the other idiots on there. But Bryan is a very welcome addition. Did Steve Lyons quit/retire?

Yes, Dr. Lyons left TWC to return to NOAA as an NWS employee (not nearly as unpredictable as working for NBC/TWC)...

P.S. Thanks for your post to my Max Mayfield topic - perhaps TWC should have at least a 30 minute program on the changes in hurricane models over the past 25 years, since the public is more aware of them now than even 10 years ago and more likely to understand what is being said about them (lol)...

Ah thanks Frank. That must have been a hit to TWC.
Your suggestion is great actually. I am surprised with how many regular people I talk to (people who only watch their local news for hurricane updates I mean) now know about the models. The level of knowledge varies. Some just know their are models. Others can actually name a few. And yet others can say that there's a particular model performing well in any given season. Obviously, the Internet age and smartphones/ipads has given the general public a lot more info. I think you should make that suggestion on TWC's website or Facebook wall. If this season slows for a while, they could make use of their two TS/hurricane specialists by doing something like that. There are still too many people in the 40-70 age group who think hurricane prediction is so far off that it's hardly worth paying attention to until the storm is right on top of them. They still think it's as primitive as 10-15 years ago. Knowing how much it's improved might actually get them preparing earlier. It would be a great suggestion.

I'll never forget that night also. I was up in NW Broward, away from the brunt of the storm, so I was able to follow the broadcast on TV. I stayed up all night.
You can relive that night and the days leading up with an 8-part series of videos on YouTube
Here's the first part:

There's also this video of the night the storm hit with footage from that bunker at WTVJ:

It was the 18th anniversary of the storm on Aug. 24.

I think the tropical experts can not say what they may really think though on TWC. Its owned by NBC and seems scipted to me more like a news channel based on weather JMO. I never thought I would see the day when NBC-owned TWC.

I do agree that they need more time. 2 minutes to cover a busy basin is simply not enough.

This is amazing to me. In the heart of a busy season, they're doing something about "not weather" eh?? if it's not weather, leave it off. Instead, explain about the science of forecasting, explain about models, just stick to weather!
Since NBC took over, even before then, there's too much fooling around. Weather is important - it doesn't take a hurricane to affect a lot of lives. But yesterday, I keep checking for Tropical Update and what we're getting is a show

It's terrific that Brian Norcross is there now - that is a real improvement. Now - please give him more time!

Norcross is a guy I've always respected since I got into the whole Hurricane Thing. Good to see he'll be able to reach a national audience now, and he's that "familiar face" that they really lacked outside of Jim Cantore.
Hopefully they let him do his job to the best of his ability instead of watering it down or interrupting him for TV shows.
