OT: SoBig suggestion

#1 Postby Scott_inVA » Fri Aug 22, 2003 1:03 pm

Sorry for OT but wanted to reach the masses. Our Chief Engineer emailed the network a handy tip for cleaning out the Inbox. We've done this on 14 machines here and it has helped.

This won't eliminate the issue, just make the Inbox manageable.

I posted on the web site see if it helps:

addendum: if you are getting a ton of "Returned mail: ....." emails (supposedly b/c you sent the worm), put

Returned mail:

in the spam filter along with SoBig subject headers.

More on Sobig from the UTMB website:

Virus Alert: Sobig virus may activate at 2 p.m. today
Information Services recently became aware of a potential second threat from the Sobig.F virus that has been sweeping the Internet this week. The UTMB email system has blocked most of Sobig.F-infected emails from the UTMB network. However, virus experts now believe that the Sobig.F virus also has a timer that will cause any infected computer to attempt to download additional program code from the Internet at 2 p.m. today. I.S. believes that all necessary precautions have been taken to protect the campus against this threat. However, due to widespread global infection from this computer virus, Internet traffic may increase, response time may slow and external web sites may be unavailable. Additional information will be published if conditions warrant.
