for inflation ... after looking back toward inflation to dollars as of 2000. The 1926 SE Florida/Alabama hurricane would be the leader at $87 BILLION DOLLARS in damages. This table here shows the costliest storms as they occurred and what year, followed by a revisited list with damages adjusted to today's dollars (as of the year 2000)

I'm not an accountant or insurance adjuster...but honestly believe the next large and intense cat-4 hurricane (ie.-Hugo/ Floyd/Carla) to make a direct hit on Miami/ Fort Lauderdale...cross the peninsula and hit Naples/ Fort Myers will cause $100 billion in damage in southern Florida alone.

IMO even a strong cat-3...a large Betsy/ Frederic type (125-130 mph) in that highly populated cooridor will dwarf the damage toll of Andrew.

Perry.. I agree 100%. Andrews damage total will easily be beaten I feel also with a hit on a major metro area:):)
