1947 Fort Lauderdale Hurricane

#1 Postby Ptarmigan » Tue Dec 13, 2011 12:36 am

I looked up the 1947 Fort Lauderdale Hurricane and it made landfall on St. Bernard Parish as a major hurricane. If I recall the area where it made landfall is the worst case scenario for New Orleans. I wonder if the 1947 Hurricane happened today. It did not cause New Orleans to be abandoned for a time after Katrina.

Wikipedia is wrong on that one. That hurricane made landfall as a minimal hurricane in Louisiana. It only had winds of 90 mph with a one minute maximum of 110 mph according to Jay Barnes' "Florida's Hurricane History". Plus most tracking maps I've seen are accurate and show it making landfall at Category 1 strength as does I think HURDAT. However if it had made landfall with the 155mph winds as it did in Florida, I agree with you it would be pretty bad because that hurricane was large, powerful and slow moving.

If I recall correctly, the 1947 hurricane was the last hurricane to track directly over New Orleans. There was extensive flooding along Lake Ponchatrain from the strong north winds that pushed lake water into the city. There was minimal levee protection in those days along the lakefront.....MGC
