Hurricane Andrew Remembered

#1 Postby Frank2 » Wed Sep 12, 2012 1:15 pm

Hurricane Isaac overshadowed the 20th Anniversary of Andrew on August 24, but wanted to take a moment a post a not-so-good memory from 20 years ago...

I evaculated to Palm Beach County about 8 hours before Andrew made landfall and everything went just fine up there, but on returning to South Dade (near Tamiami Airport, for those who know the area) 24 hours later, well, it was pure pandemonium, and so bad that before and since then I've had nightmares that were more enjoyable than that day...

It made me regret the day I moved back to South Florida two years earlier (I had moved to North Florida for a time), and worse yet, I found that my rented home was so badly damaged to be unliveable and was forced to join the ranks of the "250,000 made homeless" by returning to Palm Beach County later that day - incredibly stressful, and it took me a long time to feel better about hurricane season, even though I lived in South Florida most of my life and had worked in the weather business for 10 years...

The entire experience was so bad for everyone that to this day Brian Norcross (TWC) prefers not to talk about it at length, and one local ABC reporter, having lived here for many years, left soon after with his entire family and accepted a reporting job at an affiliate in - Montana...

So, the next time you wish that not all hurricanes would recurve, just think of what it could be like if one doesn't...
