This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Why Didn't Barbara get any Recon?

#1 Postby Kingarabian » Thu May 30, 2013 1:40 pm

I thought all storms, be it in the Atlantic Ocean or Eastern Pacific; that pose a threat to land-masses get Reconnaissance?

Or have the rules changed?

Recon typically needs at least a 24 hour heads up before they can deploy. The initial forecast had the system staying as a moderate tropical storm, and between availability and her forecast to stay weaker originally probably led to them deciding not to send recon out. It is a very long trip, and they would only get a couple passes in, at most. By the time they got there, the system could have been inland! Save the now very limited money and supplies for closer threats later in the season!

There are no set in stone rules. This was forecasted to be a weak tropical storm that was going to quickly make landfall in Mexico. Even if they had time to prepare for the flight, it still would have been a waste of time and money IMO.
